It’s not uncommon for students to drive on 1100 East near Sugar House and see a group of individuals sprinting down the street.

Most people are confused of where they’re running from and why they look so exhausted.

The answer is Boxing is for Girls (BIFG), a small boxing gym located on 1983 S. 1100 East. This is not an ordinary gym—the trainers there not only aim to make visitors stronger physically but also to build them up mentally.

Nine years ago, Eliza James, owner of BIFG, found an abandoned garage tucked back in Sugar House and decided this was going to be her gym. Today, BIFG has expanded with a fitness studio up front and added weights and aerobic machines.

This gym focuses on overall self-wellness through strengthening an athlete’s body and mind.

“If Eliza could, she would name the gym ‘you are perfect, complete and whole just the way you are,’” said Lori Leighton, co-owner of the gym. “Eliza can train individuals of any age, her specialty is getting inside her client’s head and helping them reach their goals.”

BIFG helps athletes reach their goals both inside and outside of the gym.

“Whatever your goal in life is, we’ll talk about it during the workout; we’ll help you reach those goals,” said James, owner of the gym.

BIFG has trained Olympians, NFL players, college athletes and regular people from all walks of life. Today, it trains both women and men. Whether an experienced boxer or someone who’s never put gloves on before, BIFG welcomes everyone with open arms.

Boxing for Girls is located on 1100 East across the street from Sugar House Pub. The gym has been open for nine years and has trained everyone from Olympians to every day individuals.
