With the new year comes New Year’s resolutions, but unlike other years, this year Westminster’s student government had a different kind of resolution in mind.
Previously, ASWC underwent a rebranding and has now become ASW. The rebranding comes as a response to the potential change of the school’s name from Westminster College to Westminster University.
Why ASW?
The rebranding began as updating ASWC and its branches, but with the potential school name change in the near future, the student government officials thought it would be best to plan ahead.
“When we realized that change could be happening, we changed it to ASW,” said Sarah Hirning, ASW Events president. “So, if that change does happen in the near future, the student government at the time won’t have to worry about removing the C from ASWC.”
Along with the rebranding of ASW, Hirning said the student government had events in August to welcome students to school, but realized the spring semester didn’t have any of its own.
“There are all these new students in the spring semester, too, and we have never really done a welcome back week,” Hirning said. “We wanted to try it out this year, and it helped that we were launching ASW.”
As part of ASW’s new endeavors, it hosted a Welcome Back Week for students. Students had the opportunity to attend events throughout the week, such as ice skating at the Gallivan Center, dancing the night away at the Gatsby Dance and watching a movie.
Welcome Back Week
With classes starting back up, many Griffins reconnected with fellow students with ice skating, a movie and a dance. Even in the cold, many students came out to ice skate at the Gallivan Center.
“It was really fun,” said Devon Clark, sophomore finance major.
When asked if she would go to more ASW events she said, “I think so…if it is ice skating.”
Many students weren’t aware of the change from ASWC to ASW. Kira Jefferson, junior art administration major, said she hadn’t heard about the change, and when asked about the event she said, “Ice skating is always fun, kind of strange there was a big turn out, but that’s good.”
What to expect this semester
This semester, many traditional events are coming up, according to Hirning, ASW Events president.
“One event students should look forward to is the Purple and Gold Gala,” she said. “We are thinking of making it different than in years past. There will also be a spring dance. There will also be a Taboo Talk with Kim Zarkin to preview her May Term class, How to be a Bitch, and that should be really interesting.”
