The Sugar House Farmers Market announced it will be extending its season into the fall for its first annual Fall Harvest Market.
The market recently found its summer home at Fairmont Park, but it won’t be staying there all winter. Instead, it will move to Wilmington Plaza, right next to Westminster on the Draw.
“We really want to highlight Wilmington Plaza and the Wilmington Flats area,” said Amy Buchanan, board chair of the Sugar House Farmers Market. “It’s just a fabulous space with some great local flair. We want to bring the vendors, the music [and] all the excitement we’ve had [at the summer market] and continue it into the fall.”
Because the space at Wilmington Plaza is limited, Buchanan said she estimates the fall market will fit 15 to 20 vendors compared to the 40 to 50 vendors at the Summer Market.
“We’re going to be outside in the elements,” Buchanan said. “Bundle up, wear the right gear and come out and have fun.”
Daniel Benites, owner of Salsa Del Diablo, said he plans on introducing more products at the Fall Harvest Market to fit the cold weather.
“We’ll actually add a Mexican hot chocolate,” Benites said. “I love the snow, but I know not everyone does.”
Although Benites said he is excited for the fall market, there are some vendors who don’t plan on participating—including Jared Haskins, owner of Hand Sown Homegrown produce.
“I’m on one acre, so I’ve got limited space,” Haskins said. “I’m looking to finish out Wheeler’s Farm Market and then take a break.”
Buchanan said the board expects the same community support in the new area as it had at Fairmont Park.
“We’ve had a really great response with the Sugar House Farmers Market, so we thought, ‘Let’s continue it and see what we can do,’” Buchanan said.
Melo Flores, a board member of the Sugar House Farmers Market, said volunteers have made the events successful in the past, and the market is looking for more people to help.
“We’ve had so many stellar people stand up and be like, ‘What can I do to help?’” Buchanan said. “That’s been really eye opening.”
With the constant construction on 2100 South next to Wilmington Plaza, Buchanan said the board hopes to bring the attention the new space deserves.
“There are some really fantastic spaces that haven’t even been touched yet,” Buchanan said. “We want people to get excited and maybe even start to do their own projects in some of these places like Fairmont Park, Wilmington Flats, Sugarmont Plaza and Monument Plaza and just be creative and come together as a group and have fun.”
The Fall Harvest Market will be held every Wednesday from Nov. 2 to Dec. 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
