Unhinged is a quirky Sugar House shop and boutique that has provided a space for local artists and vintage sellers to share their work with the community for the past three years.
Located on the corner at 2165 South Highland Drive, Unhinged features 25 local artists each year. Some sell their goods at local farmer’s markets, others solely use Etsy and are looking for a way to gain more street traffic.
Erin Moore, a Westminster senior, has worked at Unhinged for almost two years.
“Our shop is special because we have a mix of new and vintage clothing, as well as locally made goods,” Moore said. “Most shops are either one or the other.”
Unhinged employees take pride in the fact that they have a variety of merchandise.
“I’m always going to farmer’s markets and scouting out new artists that I think would be a good fit for our store,” Moore said.
Sure enough, Corey Folster, owner of Unhinged, recently found a good fit. The shop now carries a spunky new collection of vintage clothing and goods: The Cosmic Wolf Collection by Kristen Chivers.
Chivers is originally from San Francisco but said she moved to Salt Lake City when she discovered the plethora of vintage finds available in Utah.
“I just recently moved to Salt Lake City,” Chivers said. “It’s great for vintage, and I’ve met a handful of fantastic people, all creative and inspiring in their own ways.”
The Cosmic Wolf Collection is a blend of retro clothing with a psychedelic feel. Chivers said she found her inspiration as a little girl when she watched her grandparents sing and dance to songs from the 60s and 70s. She said she has been “infected” with this time period ever since.
“I’m inspired by the underground music of the 60s and 70s,” Chivers said. “I feel like in order to love the clothing, you need to know the music. I definitely couldn’t have one without the other.”
